FUBAR

(fubar)

In the smoking pits of high schools and on the tailgates of pick-up trucks in stadium parking lots across North America, there exists a breed of long-haired culture rebels known as Headbangers. FUBAR asks: who is that guy with a six-pack of cans riding a beat-up 10-speed and why does he have that haircut?

synopsis Quintessential Canadians Dean Murdoch (Spence) and Terry Cahill (Lawrence) are lifelong friends who have grown up together: shot-gunning their first beers, exploring the healing power of heavy metal, and growing the great Canadian mullet known as “hockey hair”. Their lives are brought to the big screen by “documentarian” Ferral Mitchner in an exploration of the depths of friendship, the fragility of life, growing up gracefully, and the art and science of drinking beer like a man. Their lives take a sobering turn as one of the characters is diagnosed with "nut cancer" and their lives take on a whole new adventure.

background Written and directed by Michael Dowse and written by and starring Paul Spence and Dave Lawrence, FUBAR is a riotous comedy following the exploits of two hard-drinking, rock and roll everymen. FUBAR grew out of a comedy sketch that Lawrence had created in the late ’90s, as part of his improv routine at Calgary’s Loose Moose Theatre. Lawrence and Spence had met up while working in the pipelines in Northern Canada, and both recognized the comic potential in the headbanger.

Sundance Film Festival FUBAR premiered in the "Park City at Midnight" category (which previously launch the little known film THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT).

2002 Genie Award Best Achievement in Editing - Michael Dowse

Unknown “The beauty of the pleasant surprise is that is sometimes takes the form of a positive situation that gets even better in an unexpected way. Every once in awhile I'll hear about something that is highly regarded and then when I encounter it, it radically exceeds all reports. This is how I feel about FUBAR, which I saw last night. I was told it was funny and a “must-see” but I did not expect to encounter my new favorite Canadian film of all time. What a film! This is Canadian arts money very well spent. It does, in fact, reassure me that grant money does get to the right artists. I think Michael Dowse, the director, is a genius. I've never been bowled over by anything made by Egoyan or McKellar. My favorite Canadian films have almost exclusively been French Canadian, but now the west hast come forth and captured my attention. Now I really want to see Dowse's newest film, IT’S ALL GONE PETE TONG.”

Jason Anderson, eye “They were down to the bare bones,” says David Lawrence in a recent phone interview with eye, “so they really stood out. And they were the raddest guys ever. Out of anybody else there, they were the ones who were the most true to themselves. They liked what they liked and they didn't give a fuck. They were a major influence. Even now, if I’m at a party and a wicked banger shows up, I notice the things he says, the way he acts. There's an awe and appreciation for them.”

Mari Sasano, Broken Pencil “The movie is a deliriously funny digital video project starring Calgary actors Paul Spence and David Lawrence as a couple of unreconstituted headbangers, livin’, lovin’, and especially drinkin’ their way out of a crisis.”

Reel Criticism “If you are at all willing to stray from the beaten path this mockumentary is a decided treat. The performances here are perfect, each and every one of them do a fine job.”

Rich Cline, Z Review UK “The performances are extremely clever and very real.”

Matthew Leyland, BBC “What follows is an exploration of friendship, dealing with life's hard knocks and how you can get wasted enough for jumping over a campfire in the nude to seem like a good idea.”

Canuxploitation Review “This is the kind of Canadian film I would love to see more of, and I think it appeals to a whole new audience of Canadians. And make no mistake about it, FUBAR is very Canadian. If you grew up in small town Canada, you will definitely find something to relate to in this film, whether it's the people, the camping trip, or the hard-working, hard-partying mentality. Director Michael Dowse has captured a portrait of Canadian youthfulness, proving that Calgary is a neglected centre of offbeat directorial talent.”

Apollo Movie Guide “FUBAR is all about having a good time and enjoying life while it lasts. Its message is a lot like the movie watching experience – take it too seriously and you’re likely to miss out. Take it too lightly, and you’re doomed to become a freeloading slacker like Dean or Terry. Whatever road you choose, just make sure you’ve got a tape player up front, a six pack in the trunk and your best friend in the passenger seat.”

Matthew Hays, Montreal Mirror Says Spence, “I based the character pretty closely on a friend I had in junior high school. He had shocking red hair. He had written METALLICA himself on the back of his jean jacket in felt marker. The inside of his coat read, ‘I’m a fucking genius.’ He had failed a couple of times so he was a few years older than me. He smoked dope at recess. I never knew what became of him.”
