It's All Gone Pete Tong (it's all gone wrong)

(it’s all gone pete tong)

DJ Frankie Wilde is on top of the world. He’s one of Europe’s top DJs and the party drug of choice for hedonistic youth each holiday season in Ibiza, where he lives extravagantly in a villa with trophy wife Sonia and a barely noticed stepson. Frankie has also just crossed over successfully into producing his own records. But there’s a sudden major glitch.

synopsis IT'S ALL GONE PETE TONG is a biopic based on the tragic life of world famous DJ Frankie Wilde. The story follows Frankie’s life from the euphoric peak as one of the most sought after DJs alive, through his sudden deafness and subsequent depression, and culminates in his mysterious disappearance from the scene.

background Written and directed by Michael Dowse and written by and starring Paul Spence and Dave Lawrence, FUBAR is a riotous comedy following the exploits of two hard-drinking, rock and roll everymen. FUBAR grew out of a comedy sketch that Lawrence had created in the late ’90s, as part of his improv routine at Calgary’s Loose Moose Theatre. Lawrence and Spence had met up while working in the pipelines in Northern Canada, and both recognized the comic potential in the headbanger.

For a time, DJ Frankie Wilde was King of the Vinyl in Ibiza and beyond. His live sets were legendary, not just for their tendencies to stretch and break every musical limitation but for Frankie Wilde's relentless on-stage energy, fueled no doubt by a limitless drug addition.

However, no one could fatham the speed and breadth of success of his self-produced album OTAY, an album some DJs have remarked "akin to listening to the Beatles for the first time" or "watching Elvis shake his hips" or "Mahler's 5th Symphony". The success of OTAY was mostly due to its crossover popularity from dance and rave goers to more mainstream, and this opened up opportunities for Frankie Wilde to perform in the United States in such venues as 1015 (San Francisco) and Limelight (New York City).

Frankie Wilde stepped off the music scene for a couple years before reuniting with Max Hagger and Jack Stoddart of Motor City Records for the follow-up HEAR NO EVIL.

Frankie Wilde continues to create music today. (full bio)

the phrase “It’s all gone Pete Tong” is Cockney rhyming slang that means “It’s all gone wrong”. The phrase works as a rhyme on Tong’s name – not as an insult to him.

Awards (Grand Jury Award + Audience Award , Gen ArtFilm Festival) (Best Feature + Best Actor , US Comedy Arts Festival) (City Award, Toronto Film Festival)

Glenn Kenny/Premiere3 Stars! This is a crazily energetic evocation of an amped-up subculture, telling a crazier story still. 24 Hour Party People fans willing to go along with a joke will rightfully lap it up.”

Edward Havens/Filmjerk.com “Buoyed by an amazing performance by British actor Paul Kaye, "It's All Gone" is one of the better movie biographies to come out in a very long time...."It's All Gone Pete Tong" is a triumph that deserves to be seen.”

Manohla Dargis/NYTimesFrankie spins gold not just vinyl. The fanged, stuffed monster that rides shotgun with Frankie during his binges is genius”

Russell Scott Smith/ New York Post “(It's All Gone Pete Tong)...has the same propulsive, punk rock vibe as "Trainspotting" and "24 Hour Party People"

Eddie Goldberger/NYSunWriter/Director Michael Dowse confidently handles these thematic hangs without making his film sentimental and maintains a dark and sly comic tone throughout. What starts out as a typical film about drug addiction ends up as something altogether more original and satisfying.”

NEW YORK TIMESPlayed with genuine heart and talent by Paul Kaye...Mr. Kaye's performance pushes at extremes...the British comic turned actor appears in almost every scene and he carries that weight admirably. He manages the very neat trick of keeping you interested in a character who doesn't merit our affection but earns it nonetheless.”

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS “Kaye turns in a chaotic and ultimately moving performance

NEWSDAY “The film is anchored by Kaye, a British comedian, whose mad-stork demeanor is disarming and riveting

VILLAGE VOICE “Kaye's performance does not miss a beat

XFM Magazine “Paul Kay is magnificent!!”

ZOO WEEKLY “Paul Kaye is an absolute genius

BPM Magazine “IT'S ALL GONE PETE TONG has much in common with Oscar-nominated movies about journeys of spiritual awakening.... Kaye perfectly conveys all the characteristic trappings of someone enjoying the benefits of fame a little too much, and he does it all with deft aplomb.”

One of the Top Ten Films of 2004 (Canada)

George MelnykWriter-director Michael Dowse has a new hit. This is a redemptive study of celebrity hood. Paul Kaye, who plays Frankie Wilde, the club DJ who has to face musical oblivion, should be nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Pete Tong. With this film Dowse becomes the hot new talent in English-Canadian cinema.”

Andre Lavoie “After the furious and impertinent FUBAR, Michael Dowse does it again, still funny and irreverent but with much more maturity. Full of energy, combining irony and documentary methods, this story of a deaf DJ makes us laugh, cry … and tap our feet!”

Peter HowellMichael Dowse (FUBAR) has a knack for mixing the comic and tragic that is almost unequalled in this country. IT’S ALL GONE PETE TONG begins as a comedy about a British rave DJ (Paul Kaye) who has spun himself to wealth, fame and all the wild living he can handle. It turns into a deeply affecting study of adversity when the DJ goes deaf.”
